75-World Day of Prayer for the Sick
Archbishop Murphy made his public return to ministry on February 10, 1997. He presided at the celebration of Mass at St. James Cathedral to commemorate World Day of Prayer for the Sick.
The archbishop began his homily by stating, “It is good to gather with you here this evening in St. James Cathedral as we celebrate World Day of Prayer for the Sick. … In the past, I would lead such celebrations as one who would share these gifts with others. Tonight, however, I come as one who also shares the human condition of fragility and illness. I join all of you who suffer from cancer or leukemia, HIV or aging, broken bones or broken spirits, emotional or physical disabilities. Together, we come to listen to God’s Word and receive God’s gifts.”
