34-A meaningful outreach to young people

One of the most vibrant elements of Bishop Murphy’s priestly life was his ministry to young people. His outreach emphasized relaying the message of the Gospel and the faith traditions of the church to young people in language to which they could relate.
He offered the following reflection in a Montana Catholic Register column from May of 1983,“I also consistently discover that in speaking to young people and with young people, they are anxious to hear the Gospel message. But this Gospel message and the teaching of the church must speak to their lives and to the challenges they face. A hesitancy to relate the gospel message in concrete terms to the lives of young people would mean that religion is not for them. This would be tragic because the message of Jesus and the teaching of the church speak powerfully to the questions young people raise today.
