81-The shepherd travels to his flock one last time
Archbishop Murphy was well aware of the serious nature of his illness. As a result, he had the opportunity to plan the events that would take place in the immediate aftermath of his death. The archbishop acted as a true shepherd to the very end. In a break from the tradition of lying in state in St. James Cathedral and having his flock come to him, he requested that his remains be taken to the different corners of the Archdiocese of Seattle for the conduct of public viewings of his body and memorial services. Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen presided at each of the services that took place in parish churches in Everett, Olympia, Tacoma and Vancouver. Even in death, Archbishop Murphy acted as the true shepherd tending to his flock one final time.
