World Youth Day: A celebration of hope

Archbishop Murphy reflects on his recent journey to Denver, CO to celebrate World Youth Day with Pope John Paul II in his weekly Catholic Northwest Progress “In Joy and Hope” column. Young people participating in the event universally expressed hope, joy and peace. Their expressions left an indelible impact on the archbishop. The experience prompted him to ask how the Archdiocese of Seattle could more effectively reach out to young people. “As an archdiocese and as parish and faith communities, we must respond to the challenge which World Youth Day offered to us,” said Archbishop Murphy. “Young people are the church today; they are as well the church of tomorrow.”
