March 17, 1993

The call for peace and an end to violence and hatred in Northern Ireland are the central messges of Archbishop Murphy’s homily on St. Patrick’s Day. This day each year was a special one for him. His parents emigrated to America from Ireland in the ealry 1900s. They instilled in him a great pride in his Irish heritage. He calls on all Christians to make God’s word come to life in their lives. For bringing God’s word to life will help usher in peace for the Irish people and the world. “What seems to attract us to this celebration (St. Patrick’s Day) is that behind it all, there is a sense of hope and joy, the belief that things need not be as they are,” said Archbishop Murphy.
