The Call of the Church in Responding to the Cry of the Poor

In this keynote address to the St. Vincent de Paul Society National Convention at Notre Dame University, Bishop Murphy draws attention to the plight of the tens of millions of poor people in our country and around the world. He links the central mission of the Catholic Church to the calling all Vincentians must answer – to serve the poor. The bishop said, “If the Church is to be faithful to its identity of preserving, teaching and celebrating the values of Jesus, the Church too must hear the cry of the poor – and respond.”
