Archbishop Murphy greets and blesses a young woman making her confirmation.

Greeting the future of the church at confirmation

Conferring the sacrament of confirmation was one of the most vibrant parts of Archbishop Murphy’s ministry. He truly relished the opportunity to interact with young people at such an important moment in their lives as Christians.

Archbishop Murphy stated the following in his column in the May 6, 1993 edition of the Catholic Northwest Progress, “When I anoint the foreheads of young people at confirmation, and extend my hand and a greeting of peace to them, I look at them straight in the eye and I deliberately hold their hand until they look back. It might be but a moment’s eye contact, but each time it happens, my hope for the future is renewed.

“It is pretty obvious that I believe in young people today. I believe we have the rare opportunity to have an impact on their lives if we dare to believe in them, to trust them, to listen to them. They are the best resource we have. May we appreciate this resource to the fullest.”
