Post graduate education

At the time of his ordination to the priesthood in 1958, the Reverend Thomas J. Murphy earned undergraduate and masters degrees in religion from St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. His masters thesis was titled “Nulla Salus Extra Eccleisam” or “No Salvation Outside of the Church.” The thesis paper explored the doctrine of eternal salvation, analyzed its application in real life and finally sought to challenge its foundations from the perspective of a heresy.

St. Mary of the Lake Seminary awarded the Reverend Thomas J. Murphy a doctorate in sacred theology in 1960. His doctoral thesis was titled “De Bello” or “Of War.” The doctoral thesis paper analyzed an article of St. Thomas Aquinas’ “Summa Theologica” – De Bello. More specifically, Reverend Murphy performed a detailed review and study of the concept of a “just war.”
