The origins of “In Christ Joy and Hope”

In preparation for his ordination as bishop, the Very Reverend Thomas J. Murphy is given the unique honor of creating his coat of arms. The coat consists of a number of graphical elements and a motto. He chose as his motto “In Cristo Gaudium Et Spes” which translated in English means “In Christ Joy and Hope.”

At the time of his ordination, Bishop Murphy stated, “The motto I choose represents what I aspire to in my service as a bishop of the church. It is a simple and direct message with strong roots in the teaching of the Second Vatican Council. For me, the challenge of ministry today is to provide people with a spirit of optimism and the desire to make a difference.”
