Bartholomew and Nellie Murphy settled on the West Side of Chicago in the Garfield Park neighborhood. The archbishop’s father pursued a career as a life insurance sales professional. He also made it a priority to help other men and women who emigrated from Ireland get settled upon their arrival in Chicago. Bartholomew and Nellie were blessed with three children – Bartholomew Jr., Thomas and Eileen. Thomas J. Murphy was born on October 3, 1932.
