Bishop Murphy made it a priority to remain continuously present to the laity, religious men and women and priests of the Church of Eastern Montana. Due to the massive size of the Diocese of Great Falls, MT, he often developed innovative ways to tend to his flock.
One such example was the telephone communications system deployed in February of 1979. Bishop Murphy led the inaugural use of the system to conduct a series of discussions on the Second Vatican Council. People gathered in approximately 40 locations throughout the diocese dialed in to listen to him provide unique insights into the meaning and significance of Vatican II.
